s02 e13 Cursor, Claude, Apple & a New Studio

• Hi. (laughing) Today we are talking about AI. (laughing)
• Are you surprised?
• I would hope so.
• Yeah.
• Considering that's our MDOT podcast.
• Well if my engineer would put the agenda back on the screen.

• So, it's been a few weeks. I know it may not even feel real right now because we're just working on so many different things that we're trying to get right for you guys. We're trying to make this a more interactive experience for you and for you to be able to learn. And for us to be able to do that, what did we really need? Brandon.
• So we needed, we need all of this stuff. You can't necessarily see what's all getting plugged in behind the cameras here. But we've got computers, we've got mixers, we've got a huge ass TV screen here. But the main objective of basically being able to present to you guys things as we're going through where we can have this whole experience and be able to show you more so than just talk about it. We wanna really be able to start showcasing some of the technology. And so we're hoping that this is gonna allow us to kind of get there. Again, this is our first, this will be, if we release it, it will be our first official podcast from the Crafted Studios. And we've got some lights coming so we'll continue to improve on it. But yeah, I'm excited to see if this is gonna pan out or not.
• So to start today, I've got some, I had some cool articles that I've been reading in the past couple of weeks. But a lot of this stuff that's going on right now is, I mean, I think that the overall temperature of AI in the workplace, especially when it comes to software development and really the tip-top of the edge of technology and innovation, it's like a catapult that's just literally arriving at the castle, it's like exploding right now. How many we've got cursor? The new IDE for writing code, who's using it?
• Yeah, I'm using it.
• Jacob's using it.
• I love it.
• I'm using it!
• How much are you guys paying?
• 20 bucks a month.
• My free track, well, they just got me 'cause I ran out of my free premium LLM hits, so.
• Okay, so wait, wait, what is that? What is that?
• So they have their own small model, it's not very good, but it's used in a lot of aspects of the product, but they're basically just using 4.0 preview and then then clod.
• You can pick which one you want to use while you're being asking questions.
• So but are they using 4.0 or are they using 0.1 preview?
• Both, oh yeah, sorry, 4.0 and 0.1.
• You can do both, they did bring 0.0. So how much slower is 0.1 for you guys?
• You know, with specifically in--
• I don't use it inside of cursor because I've found 4.0 is really good.
• Show our people how you even switch between models on chat GPT. It's like, so chat GPT has different models that you can use, and essentially each one is kind of a progression, but the good thing about chat GPT is you can switch between them.
• No, like 3.5 isn't even a--
• No, it's not even an option anymore.
• It's not even an option anymore.
• You pretty much have 4 is the oldest one, then you have 4.0, and then you have the preview 0.1. And so if you guys haven't played around with 0.1 preview yet, what's interesting about this is we'll just do something like write a blog post about the, I don't know, how to make amazing cheese.
• And what we're gonna see, though, is you're gonna notice right up towards the top, it's gonna be thinking--
• Yeah, it's just thinking.
• Well, I'm thinking.
• Now I can expand this, and what you're gonna see is you're gonna actually see it go through, and it's doing actually multi-prompts now. So when you thought about before you'd ask a question, your answer would come out, that answer would be, I don't know, 1,000 tokens, whatever. Now what's actually happening is behind the scenes is it's going through, and it's just burning tokens to kind of come up and think through this. And then once it finally gets to an answer that it feels satisfactory on, it's actually then going to go and generate the blog post. So what's great about this, though, is that it's catching errors in math, it's catching all sorts of just different aspects of the query that you're doing. So it goes through, and you can see it as it's thinking. It's like, oop, no, but I made a mistake, and it kind of goes back. So this is a really interesting approach. What's funny, though, is a couple weeks ago, a new model was released by Matt Schuller, I think his name was, called Reflection. And he took this Reflection model, and he did a very similar thing, where it went through this process of thanking, and then it actually did its final output. So he was kind of ahead of what OpenAI did. Now again, they released us two weeks later, and they'll dominate.
• Well, if you go back to the episode earlier in our season with Aaron Shaver, it was, we had never been introduced to the concept of reasoning in AI, and the levels of progression. And what you're seeing is literally a software-driven way of doing the reasoning. Basically, he's like, hey, what steps am I gonna bring this problem up? Okay, well, if it's four steps, I'm gonna try the first step and then kind of check it.
• It reminds me of AutoGPT in the very beginning, where it talked about burning through tokens.
• Oh, that was the worst.
• It would just sit there and grind and grind, and need just be, you know--
• Just panicking.
• Yeah, yeah. But it was trying to do the same thing, but it was very archaic, and I think the way that it did it, this just feels way more refined. And it is very cool.
• Okay, I've had a couple, I had one that took like 45 seconds of thought for it to go through in the kind of relic process, and that was amazing, like you really did see like, oh, it's actually like really trying to work through this before it gives me the output. But nevertheless, all of those tokens, as it's going through its thought process, they're burning, like you're gonna get charged for those. So O1 preview is definitely like a hungry token hippo.
• Did you guys see they just announced that--
• They last the same question on four, yeah, on four.
• Oh, okay.
• Yeah, the tokens are what, was it four or O1, four O or O1 preview or both, that tokens are now what, 50% cheaper, magically?
• Yes, so for the for the four O mini, what the hell I can't, apparently I'm not able to select it. So we'll do four O, write a blog post about how to make cheese. And now again, what this is just gonna do is just--
• Boom, it just makes it.
• Boom, it just does it. It's not gonna be thinking through it. It's not gonna be, so if I ask it to ask me anything about math or anything like that, again, it's just going to do its predictive token generation. It doesn't really care about if it's right or not. So that first step of O1 preview is it's really going through and being like, all right, I'm gonna predict this, then I'm gonna go double check my work to make sure I wasn't an asshole and made up some stuff.
• Remember when it was like the older models of it, sure I can help you with that, you know? And they're starting to see these system prompts that are behind a lot of this. A lot of this is just like really nicely architected system prompts that they're using.
• 100%. 100% is that the system prompts and the shadow prompt is what we would call them at prompt privacy. The shadow prompt that actually controls you, puts the guardrails up, make sure that things aren't allowed to go off the rails. Those things are absolutely critical. And as we talk about Claude and their artifacts, that's a big one that they've incorporated. Their artifacts, we had a deep dive into artifacts. So that could be an interesting one to dive into next. But they have a ton of that happening at the shadow prompt level, where they're going through and they're defining all that, which actually I can bring up. I love other artifacts.
• So Claude has a desktop app essentially?
• No, so Claude does do a PWA though. So you can-- - Oh, yeah.
• So you're Mr. PWA.
• I am kidding, come on.
• For those of you that want to understand how computers actually work, that was not a real app, it was just some way to say that he had to do his home screen and they call it a PWA.
• Shut up, Flappy Birds. So if you want to switch to the, okay, well, there we go. So we'll do a generate a Flappy Bird clone using HTML, JavaScript and CSS. So this is now generally available for all users of Claude, so you can go to Claude.a.
• Oh, that is nice.
• And so here's what Claude does is this is what we just saw is it's now generating an artifact. So like if you use chat GBT in the past, what it would do is it generate the same thing, but it's just going to be in that single chat.
• Holy cow, is it running this code?
• Yes, and so now, so we can see that it didn't actually, it didn't work. Oh, okay, so like nothing, I can't control this at all. So now, but I'm going to go over here.
• Where's the code?
• Oh, there's a tab for the code.
• Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. So you can still see the code.
• But can you edit it?
• Yeah, well, no, you can't edit, but you can see what it does. But let's just say, so now I wanted to do is make the bird fly each time I hit the space bar. And so what it does though, unlike chat GBT, which we just generated all again, it knows that we're working on the same chunk of code. So it's now just going to go and update that specific artifact, that chunk of code, right? And this just makes it super easy for you to kind of continually be able to expand. And now we go, okay, so let's refresh it.

• It's not working. Ah, you--
• It did something.
• It did. So funny enough, as soon as we were playing with this originally, it's not working.
• Dude.
• Dude.
• I apologize for the confusion. Let's troubleshoot. First, I'd like to confirm a few things. Are you able to say the game canvas?
• Right.
• Is the bird visible and failing? Falling.
• No.
• Oh.
• Oh.
• Go ahead, space by now.
• Oh, come on. Yeah, no, totally not working. But again, so--
• I mean, it wrote some code.
• It wrote some code, right? And literally right before this, I did this on the Mac that we're now running here in the studio. And I did get it to where I could do my space bar and it would fly through the things and it would game over if I hit the tubes. But nevertheless, what's really cool about what Claude's doing here is this is actually built into Claude's model. So when you actually watch the output that's coming from Claude when it's doing it, they have their own, it's almost like XML, but not really. It's not like valid XML, but it's their own syntax of XML that gets output from their large language model that the front end is paying attention to.
• So this is what I've been dreaming about every single night for a while now. And you see it, which is the, this is what's happening with the real time API. That, and I don't want to skip to that yet, but chat GPT, which is there is a language that AI needs to speak and a schema in which it needs to respond to create the automation that's needed for AI to succeed. So AI can't just respond. Sure, let me help you with that. I'll write that code. It needs to be like, it needs to respond in a way that is, that is congruent with other things. So if it's responding in code, it needs to kind of give a structure to that response. If you're sending an prompt or you expect a result, the concept of saying, "Hey, I want to talk to AI right now, "but I need it to kind of talk in this other language "so that it can be interpreted by this other source system "that's not necessarily, it needs exactness."
• Yeah.
• You know what I mean? You've been doing, and you're talking about JSON schema.
• Right, yeah, so that's really what's interesting about how LLMs are gonna direct us is almost to more standardization. And you called it like months and months ago where you're talking about accessibility, right? Like you were talking about how accessibility, which is good for humans, also makes it extremely accessible for the machines. Same thing I think happens here is that, basically as long as we can start using standards, 'cause again, oh, that's actually, this is a really interesting one. I have a project that is to help document Cobalt code, okay?
• Of course you, Cobalt, right? And so I'm like, all right, so I started asking some LLMs about Cobalt, and it's just not very good. Like again, really good at JavaScript, really good at Python, Cobalt, not so much.
• Really?
• Yeah, so I'm like, hey, I want you to, knowing all of the code bases that you have in your corpus, I want you to generate a list from top to bottom of the ones that you can support the most, to the ones you can support the least. Just basically, how do you know about these programally? JavaScript, Python, .NET, C#, Bubba, Cobalt wasn't even on the list, right? Go find a Cobalt repository on GitHub. You're gonna have a hard time finding one. There's just not a whole lot that's out there.
• And that's the data is from the source.
• Exactly, didn't you say IBM owns Cobalt, right?
• So IBM, now that's the other thing. So IBM has come into this company who needs this and they're like, hey, we've trained Watson on all Cobalt.
• Wow.
• So we're gonna make Watson be able to be like the Cobalt co-pilot.
• Did you see that viral? Did you see that viral IBM Reddit post or whatever the other day?
• No, it was like basically like, and I've had this experience like IBM is dying. IBM's entire business model is a bunch of fluff on the outside, sponsoring the masters, but inside it's just a bunch of run up the bill, support legacy systems that you built that you also never were part of updating, right? And so like their whole business and their acting like they have this AI product, but I will say it's funny, if they're gonna do anything, I'd bring bringing AI to legacy systems built on Cobalt and make a friend code. They're the only ones that would ever build that.
• Totally.
• 'Cause if the only ones would even still have that data or even build that data.
• Wasn't there like a space, something that was running Cobalt that I had to like bring in a specialist update some shit? Anybody hear this? Like it was a couple of months ago.
• Oh, sure.
• Yeah, but it's like, yeah, that's why a lot of, shit, that's why a lot of like industries, like they don't update anything because there's so much legacy debt there. And it's so scary, right?
• You know what we should actually just quickly go and build a little model based off Cobalt ourselves and go and sell it to these companies.
• So what I'm doing, what I've decided to do with it is...
• Oh shit, you're in this.
• I am, I'm in it. And I've got it passed to me. So the first team tried to do it, they tried to give like these LLMs a lot of Cobalt to basically try to understand the business rules and all that and it just didn't do that well. And so what I found though is that like, why would, why not just do documentation like we would traditionally do documentation?
• Right.
• So we take the code, we break that down into an abstract syntax tree and then we use that abstract syntax tree to basically say, here's your public methods, your private methods, your descriptors. And you get just this kind of like, almost like the Java docs back in the end which were completely unhelpful.
• Right, right.
• But it had all the public and private methods and all that bullshit. And then once you have that, take that plus the code, feed that to an LLM and have that be able to understand the business rules and the flow and all that kind of stuff.
• Is that what you're working on now?
• Yeah.
• Well, I was and then I got pulled into a different project that entertained me more. And I just kind of put the code ball one on the back.
• I understand that.
• I was literally working on three projects today and whatever.
• Whichever one is the most gross.
• Yeah.
• Yeah.
• Yeah, yeah.

• What's the equivalent of the wrinkle in the brain when it comes to AI? (laughing) Like, does the AI really learn like in a hole or is it just given new stuff to like to train on that it can possibly.
• Yeah, no, it definitely doesn't learn. Like it definitely doesn't learn right now.
• There's no higher, there's no higher learning here.
• I think we absolutely get to a point where you're gonna have these LLMs. They're gonna be, here's, you know, we're gonna generate the LLM. The LLM's gonna be sitting here. And then on top of it's gonna be this neocortex kind of concept of a technology that sits on top that does give you a lot more of the like the intelligence and all that, that the LLM probably is more of kind of the reptilian brain versus whatever new thing we're gonna be able to come up that sits on top.
• But if that's the case, who has a bigger data set?
• Google wins. Google beats everybody all the time, every single fucking time.
• Well, well, so the question is who wins in a world where you're trying to basically create the biggest learning machine ever created.
• Yeah, it's Google. Google wins every fucking time.
• And the reason Google wins every time, they have more data than anybody, they have more infrastructure than anybody, they have more hardware than anybody, and they are willing to go and invest ridiculous amounts of money into their employees. So Google, I think, is probably sitting back right now just waiting to see what open AI, kind of their games they're gonna play. But because what Sam's trying to do right now where he's trying to generate the $7 trillion or whatever the hell it is to basically build this new machine that can generate these, is he's trying to build what Google has. Google has it. Google already has what Sam needs to basically build this next generation of AI. He wants it, and Google already is sitting on it. So I think Google wins every friggin' time, bar none.
• Well, there's one player that you're not mentioning.
• I know, and that's an apple.
• And I've been extremely fucking disappointed with Apple. So there's a huge threat to Apple, and it is right now, not Google.
• No.
• It is, it is, so just as much of a threat to Google is to open AI, open AI is a threat to Apple. Because of one premise. 80% of Apple's revenue comes from the iPhone.
• Yes.
• In two years from now, the iPhone might not even be the most popular growing device sold. Because Johnny Ive.
• I know.
• Johnny fuckin' Ives. Johnny fuckin' Ives has been hired by OpenAI, and they have been formula--
• They're gonna work on some new thing.
• They're gonna, they're saying they're gonna build a new device that is more apt for the modern society.
• So, but you're--
• And it's gonna be called The Rabbit. (laughing)
• It's your rabbit coming to you, Mary.
• But here's the problem, is that, so again, OpenAI, when OpenAI says we're gonna go and do AI, we're gonna go compete against Google. You have to compete now against Google's infrastructure, their technology, they're just their overall gorilla size, right?
• So-- - With Apple though, they're now saying we're gonna go compete against Apple. Apple dominates when it comes to supply chain, when it comes to hardware, when it comes to customer experience.
• So you're saying that, like literally, they have to, they have almost 20 years of building these--
• Yeah. - These micro sensors, the software that builds up on top of it. But here's the only issue that I have with that. What if all of that technology becomes completely ubiquitous? Because of some other new thing that has never, that doesn't even operate on that same paradigm.
• It's very possible that there's something that comes out that is so, like, that we can't even envision it right now. Like, we can't even comprehend what that device would be. And you know, I always kind of go back to Star Trek, right? Like, so you could see it be, it's our tap, whatever the hell that thing was going on.
• But even then, that's the humane pen, right? And it was a dog shit. Now again, Johnny Ives is a totally different level, but Johnny Ives was great.
• So Johnny Ives is basically the designer that worked for Steve Jobs.
• Yeah, he made the iPad, he made the new Mac, the first Mac a little bit.
• Wouldn't it make more sense? You've all seen the movie, Her. Wouldn't it just make more sense if we had something in our ear that was like, 'cause that's how we would--
• So that gets, though that gets back to Mark Zuckerberg's vision of the future. So he thinks, he's already has a premise about this, and they're always kind of lying in the weed, snake in the grass. He thinks that it is here and here.
• Yeah, yeah. Well augmented, okay, so, okay. I was looking into the--

• I was looking into the Google Glass a couple weeks ago, and I was like, all right, whatever happened to them, 'cause that was such a cool idea. And you did you see Orion, the Facebook glasses.
• Yeah, those look amazing.
• Those look pretty cool. Well, there you go. So Facebook does have a new product.
• Yeah, you're right, you hit the nail on the head. But I'm just sitting here like, okay, well it didn't work mass market because augmented reality's not there yet, and there's like a lot of things missing there, but yeah, that's what I want. I want to walk around, and then I'm like, looking over at the Chinese restaurant, and I'm like, oh, 3.9, sorry, I'm not fucking going there.
• Right, and then the gluten-free options?
• Yeah, yeah, I mean, and then I want to be able to talk to it, I want to be able to, you know, and then get a-- - I think I'm out on all that.
• Yeah.
• I don't, I think that that would be just, man, maybe I'm just thinking too small. But like, I think that the, putting something on your face and in your head, and like for a human, it's just like a very personal thing. And like, I-- - But if it was this--
• It's just like, remember when people used to have the Bluetooth on phones all the time?
• Yeah, yeah.
• Well, he was like, that guy looks like a robot.
• Okay, I will agree with you because you've seen the movie "Wally", right?
• Oh yeah. - And at the end, when that fat ass rolls out of the chair and all of a sudden they don't have that. So it, then the movie, if you haven't seen it, they're sitting in those motorized floating hover chairs and they have got their TV screen right in their face, right? And the dude accidentally falls out and he's like, oh my God, where am I? Whoa, hi, let's have a human interaction. Like, you're right, like how, like technology should be here to assist us and make our lives easier. It shouldn't control us. So like, that's really, sure, it would be cool to be able to have that information, but do I really want?
• No, but again, it will fit on this form factor. This is the goal. - Sure.
• This is the goal where, again, just a shitty pair of glasses that I got from overnight or $37 glasses or whatever, now I can be having this conversation. And at any time I can be having transcripts, I can be having kind of the augmented world around me.
• I just, so I hired a contractor that didn't speak English and we had a pretty good conversation through chat GPTs real time, which we'll talk about more later. But yeah, that's the kind of stuff. If I can use it to connect more with other people, that would be super cool. I would love to travel to another country and see the transcript of what they're saying to me and then say it back. And then it can like, that to me would be the ultimate and like, amazing interface, amazing feature. That's my number, okay, I just, that's my number one feature request is being able to talk to someone who doesn't speak my language.
• Yep, 100%. Well, so I don't know if you guys have been following, but OpenAI had their dev day and they have obviously been focusing on this, the speech concept. And I don't know if you guys have updated your app.
• Oh, I use it all the time.
• So, so give us a gist, give their viewers a gist. So it's not Siri, man.
• It's better.
• It's way better.
• It's way better.
• And it's already on your iPhone.
• No, so it's ridiculous, honestly. It's how bad Siri is. Siri just pissing me off more and more everyday.
• It's insane that there's an app on their store.

• That's better than Siri's. Literally device integrated level.
• So what's happening with this new voice model from OpenAI is that one, there's almost no latency. When you're having that quiet, you ask the question before it'd be like, bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep. And it'd be like thanking through and then it would answer you. Now it's almost no latency and you can interrupt it. And that's the most valuable thing. So we're gonna, I'll like to do a trial to see if this is gonna actually work and we'll see if the audio gets picked up when we do it. But we'll go ahead and we'll have a conversation with Chagie Petite, do you wanna switch it to the?

• A generative model is a type of AI that can generate new content.
• That's the secret sauce.
• It learns patterns from the day to day three dawn, and then creates something similar. For example, it can produce text, images, music, and even videos that are surprisingly realistic. This tech is-- - Wait, what videos? That's insane. How would it do a video?
• Generative models can create videos by learning from a large data set of existing videos. They break down the visual and temporal patterns, like movement and transitions, to generate new friends-- - Hey, wait, what's your name again?

• So what's really, which is sad, is that you had rock stars like Johnny Ives, you had Steve Jobs, obviously you had Forestall, you had all of these dudes who were just absolute frigging rock stars back in the day, building these tanks, pushing the envelopes and we're going big every single time. And then they all slowly start to leave and start their own things. And then it just becomes corporate mud. And that's where we're at. We're just in this corporate mud phase where it's just all kind of like, "Meh." You know, it's fine, it still works. I think it's still like excellent engineering.

• I do think App Intense after a year or so in the market, who knows? Some seasoning period is gonna be a big game changer for them. Because the number one frustration I have with my phone is switching context, switching between apps. And I wish that Siri, even like the other day, Siri, Google's been able to, my Google stuff as home's been able to open up Spotify. I'm triggering everything.

• And that's, and honestly, that's what's wrong now is that Jobs isn't there. And you don't have that fear of God in you to produce amazing stuff. So now we're just slowly starting to see it creep in to the UI of macOS, right? There are certain windows and dialogues that you'll see that are like, "What the fuck is this?" Like there's no way Jobs ever would've let that pass.

• So, so the LPU, what's interesting about these LPUs, and why they're so fast, so the LPUs are insanely fast for inference, so we have a model, we ask a question, we get our answer back, we're doing 1,500 tokens a second, or whatever the hell it is. It can't, you can't train on them. You can't train on an LPU, right? You have to have the big-ass GPUs, A100, the expensive things, that's, so that's the one variance between these chips.
• But that's okay. - Exactly. So, but you can get it at a tenth of the price of these GPUs, and you can have like tenth of the speed of these GPUs, just using these smaller little LPUs. And, and that's, I believe that's what Chrome Privacy is using in a lot of their hardware, are just the LPUs, 'cause they're not training. We don't need to train in the hardware.
